Why It Matters
Why Mosquitoes Are Worse in Southern California Summers
Most people think mosquitoes are a tropical problem. But Southern California’s combination of warm temperatures, standing irrigation water, and dense landscaping creates the perfect breeding environment from late May through October.
Irrigation Creates Breeding Sites
Drip systems, sprinkler heads, and drainage areas collect standing water that mosquitoes need to breed. Even a bottle cap of water can produce 300 larvae.
Warm Evenings Extend Activity
Southern California’s mild summer evenings mean mosquitoes are active longer than in regions that cool down at night.
Invasive Species Bite During the Day
The Aedes aegypti mosquito — now established in SoCal — bites during daylight hours, not just at dusk. Traditional evening avoidance isn’t enough.

Breeding Hot Spots
Where Mosquitoes Breed in Southern California Yards
01
Ornamental Water Features
Fountains, birdbaths, and ponds that lack circulation become prime breeding sites within 5–7 days of standing water.
02
Dense Ground Cover
Low-lying plants like mondo grass and ice plant trap moisture and provide resting shade for adult mosquitoes during the day.
03
Potted Plant Saucers
The saucers under pots collect water after irrigation. Often overlooked, they can breed hundreds of mosquitoes weekly.
04
Yard Drains & Low Spots
Flat areas that collect runoff after irrigation — including pool decks, patios, and yard drains — hold water long enough to breed.
05
Clogged Gutters
Leaf-filled gutters hold water for weeks after rain or roof sprinklers, producing large mosquito populations right above your outdoor living areas.
06
Pool Equipment Areas
Buckets, tarps, and equipment near pools that trap water are often the closest breeding source to where families spend time.
Our Treatment
How We Reduce Mosquito Pressure on Your Property
01
Yard & Breeding Site Audit
We walk your full property to identify all standing water sources, breeding sites, and resting areas — including spots most homeowners miss entirely.
02
Source Reduction Guidance
We document every breeding site and give you a written list of what to fix: dump, drain, fill, or treat. This is the most important step.
03
Residual Yard Treatment
We apply a residual product to vegetation, fences, shade structures, and other adult resting zones. Effective for 3–4 weeks. Targets adult mosquitoes where they rest during the day.
04
Larvicide for Standing Water
For standing water that can’t be eliminated (decorative ponds, drainage areas), we apply mosquito larvicide that prevents larvae from maturing — without harming fish or plants.

FAQs
Common Questions
Does Dr. Pest spray the whole yard?
We apply residual treatment to vegetation, shade structures, and resting zones — not an indiscriminate full-yard broadcast. We target where adult mosquitoes actually rest during the day.
Is the treatment say for kids and pets?
Yes. We use EPA-registered products and ask that children and pets stay off treated surfaces until dry — typically 30–60 minutes. We’ll confirm exact timing when we arrive.
Will one treatment fix the problem?
A single treatment significantly reduces adult mosquito pressure for 3–4 weeks. For a full summer of protection, we recommend treatments every 3–4 weeks during peak season (May–October).
Do I need to do anything before treatment?
Remove standing water from pots, toys, and low spots before we arrive. The more breeding sites eliminated before treatment, the faster you’ll see results.
What about my fish pond or water garden?
We use fish-safe larvicide specifically for ornamental water features. No need to remove fish or plants.
